‘A Perspective – Drishtikon’ is a series of lecture-demonstrations to promote the classical dance of India. This month, it is being held by the Museum Society of Mumbai with generous support from the NCPA and K.V. Mariwala Philanthropy Initiative on the 60th anniversary of the society. Kathak exponent Sanjukta Wagh will give an insightful lecture-demonstration on the occasion.

Sanjukta Wagh is the co-founder of an interdisciplinary initiative called Beej in Mumbai, which is engaged in exploring the creative process and improvisation, alternative methods of classical dance pedagogy and collaborative performance since 2005. Performer, choreographer, educator and curator, Wagh has trained extensively under Rajashree Shirke in Kathak and Murli Manohar Shukla in Hindustani music. Her engagement with theatre has been honed by playwright and director Chetan Datar, the Navarasa Sadhana training with G. Venu and a year at the Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance, London. An M.A. in English literature, she has researched and created the text for several of her productions. She has also composed music for her work. Wagh has been honoured with several awards and scholarships, including the Vinod Doshi Award for significant work in the performing arts, Aditya Vikram Birla Kala Kiran Puruskar, Sur Singar Samsad’s Singar Mani and the British Council’s Charles Wallace scholarship.

The Museum Society of Mumbai was founded in 1963 with the aim of promoting public interest in the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastu Sangrahalaya and cultivating in the people of Mumbai an appreciation for art and culture. Through the years, the society, which has a dedicated group of volunteers, has become a highly respected and dynamic organisation. Its activities include lectures by renowned national and international scholars, guided visits to significant historical and cultural sites and seminars and workshops on topics related to culture and history. The society’s aim is to inculcate a sense of history and culture in young people, offering specially tailored programmes for school and college students, besides those with disabilities, people from underprivileged backgrounds, children with cancer and senior citizens.
