Kuchipudi – Lecture-Demonstration by Amrita Lahiri

‘A Perspective – Drishtikon’ is a series of lecture-demonstrations to promote the classical dance of India. It is held by the Museum Society of Mumbai with generous support from the NCPA and K.V. Mariwala Philanthropy Initiative on the 60th anniversary of the society. This month, Kuchipudi exponent Amrita Lahiri, will give an insightful lecture-demonstration on the occasion.

Amrita Lahiri is recognised as one of the foremost young performers of Kuchipudi having trained under Anuradha Nehru, Swapnasundari and Seetha Nagajothy. Her dance performances have been acclaimed for their elegance and dynamism, combined with a refined approach. She has toured as a soloist in India and internationally, presenting Kuchipudi from its traditional origins to its contemporary forms. She presents the beauty, rhythm and joy of dance, while maintaining the precision of the classical form. She is an empanelled artiste with the Indian Council for Cultural Relations and has toured as a soloist in India and abroad, presenting Kuchipudi from its traditional origins to its contemporary forms. Amrita has a Master’s in Sociology from JNU (Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi) and has also trained in Bharatanatyam under Leela Samson.

The Museum Society of Mumbai was founded in 1963 with the aim of promoting public interest in the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastu Sangrahalaya and cultivating in the people of Mumbai an appreciation for art and culture. Through the years, the society, which has a dedicated group of volunteers, has become a highly respected and dynamic organisation. Its activities include lectures by renowned national and international scholars, guided visits to significant historical and cultural sites, and seminars and workshops on topics related to culture and history. The society’s aim is to inculcate a sense of history and culture in young people, offering specially tailored programmes for school and college students, as well as for people with disabilities or from underprivileged backgrounds, children with cancer and senior citizens.
