Broadway Classics

Jazz and the cinema are the leading arts of the twentieth century, and they’re both outsider arts—one the art of African-Americans in an age of systemic racism and casual contempt; the other a bottom-up, streetwise, unlettered entertainment built by the rejects of other arts and the strivings of new immigrants. The focus of the event is to highlight the everlasting connection between jazz and cinema.

The Mumbai based band features Lydia Hendrikje Hornung from Germany on vocals, Alfie Copovi from Spain on Piano, Odysseas Toumazou from Cyprus on guitar, Gianluca Liberatore from Italy on upright bass, Aron Nyiro from Hungary on drums.

This international group of young musicians will revisit old classics from the swing era. The repertoire chosen includes soundtracks of musical films from the 40’s and 50’s and the best of Broadway songs that later became the common ground for all jazz musicians.

The program includes All of You by Cole Porter: It was introduced by Don Ameche in the Broadway musical Silk Stockings and featured in the film version as well, and has been recorded by Fred Astaire, Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday, Tony Martin, and Anita O’Day;

I Got Rhythm, by George Gershwin, was featured in the 1943 film Girl Crazy, performed by Judy Garland and Mickey Rooney with Six Hits and a Miss, The Music Maids and Tommy Dorsey with his Orchestra and in the 1951 musical film An American in Paris performed by Gene Kelly.
