Chavittunatakam is the only existing maritime theatre tradition of the world. The influence of the sea has a profound effect on the history of Kerala. The Portuguese missionaries who came to Kerala in South India in the sixteenth century were instrumental in introducing this Latin Christian art form in Kerala. This art form, which is a combination of the aesthetic elements of both Europe and India, predominantly features artistes’ stamping / pounding (Chavittu) on the dance floor, producing resonant sounds to accentuate the dramatic situations. Foot-stamping, fighting and fencing are the essential parts of Chavittunatakam. This art form showcases many social, aesthetic, and structural elements. It became popular in and around the coastal areas of Kochin. Fishermen folk were the main performers and practitioners of this art form.
