Join us this evening to listen to Sarangi, the most traditional bowing instrument (Dhanurvādya) of India in a rare solo style presentation which is the hallmark of the Narayan tradition.

Legendary Sarangi maestro Pandit Ram Narayan, was a pioneer with a vision far ahead of his times, and what he saw in this magnificent instrument has forever changed the trajectory for this previously maligned instrument. In the words of the great violin maestro Sir Yehudi Menuhin, “Ram Narayan has given a new life to a dying instrument.”

Ram Narayan Ji devised a unique left hand as well as the right hand bowing technique, made changes to enhance the sound quality as well as the range of the instrument, created a previously non-existent format for solo sarangi combining the traditional  vocal music repertoire with the fundamental elements of instrumental music, and established sarangi on the most prestigious classical concert platforms globally as a full-fledged solo classical instrument.

In this special concert, Vasanti Shrikhande, a senior disciple of Pandit Ram Narayan Ji, will present a sarangi solo in the first half. It must be noted that it is very rare to find a lady sarangi player and that also in this unique style.

The second half will feature a sarangi recital by Pandit Ji’s grandson and student, Harsh Narayan, the torch bearer of the Narayan gharana and one of the leading sarangi players of the country.

The tabla accompaniment would be provided by Shri Achyut Tijare, a student of the revered tabla maestro, Pandit Bhai Gaitonde.
