Jun’ichirō Tanizaki’s essay In Praise of Shadows (1933) explores Japanese aesthetic sensibility, contrasting it with Western ideals. Tanizaki celebrates the subtle beauty of shadows and imperfection, critiquing the Western pursuit of light and clarity. This presentation, conceptualised by Dr. Omkar Bhatkar of Metamorphosis Theatre and Films, will blend voice, and movement to capture Tanizaki’s philosophy. By integrating movements, and poetry, the production will vividly illustrate the Japanese concept of ‘wabi-sabi’—finding beauty in imperfection and transience. This unique presentation at NCPA aims to offer a deep, multi-sensory engagement with Tanizaki’s insights into Eastern aesthetics and its contrasts with Western progress.
