Khalifa: A Musical Marathi Performance

‘Khalifa’ is a captivating musical story from the pages of the book Babulmora penned by Sahitya Akademi Award-winning Marathi novelist Ranjit Desai.

Set amidst the opulent backdrop of Nawabi culture in Delhi, renowned for its rich tabla tradition of the Delhi gharana, ‘Khalifa’ unravels the tale of Rafat Khan, a distinguished tabla player. Despite his own prowess, Khan grapples with the absence of a khalifa, a successor, in their gharana. His son, Dawood, an exceptionally gifted tabla player, yearns to make his debut in a tabla concert. However, Khan remains skeptical of his son’s abilities. Before Dawood can showcase his talent to the public, Khan insists that he proves himself before Sahukat Ali, the revered master and the sole khalifa of their gharana, who now stands in the twilight of his career. Will Dawood triumph in demonstrating his skills? Will he emerge as the rightful khalifa of their gharana?

The presentation is directed by Sachin Shirke, who has worked as an actor with renowned filmmakers including Jabbar Patel and Sai Paranjpye. He is an award-winning filmmaker recognised for his contribution to filmmaking with awards and nominations at various international and national film festivals.

Join us as we journey through the intricate rhythms of tradition and ambition in Khalifa. The 45-minute performance will be brought to life by a talented ensemble of actors and will be complemented by live classical music.
