Let’s Talk Jazz

In India, Jazz has always had a select though devoted following. With people gaining access to many other genres, many of them don’t have exposure to the beauty of jazz, even though the country has seen many talented youngsters playing this music.

Keeping that in mind, the NCPA Let’s Talk series is an initiative to introduce lay listeners to jazz to help them broaden their tastes. The sessions will cover a description of jazz, legends to follow, the contemporary scene and jazz in India. Stay tuned in at 5.30 pm every Friday this August.

What is jazz?: An introduction. Objective of this series, mentioning NCPA initiative. Simple tips on appreciating jazz – through live shows (including online now) and recordings. Instruments used, vocal vs instrumental, and basic features like composition, standards, improvisation and solos. Just the basics without getting technical

August 14
Know the legends: Some of the important figures in jazz over the years and their contribution. This will simultaneously cover the evolution of jazz, how sounds have changed and landmark recordings

August 21
Modern and contemporary jazz: What to expect in a live show today. People who have played a role in providing new sounds beginning with Miles Davis, Weather Report and John McLaughlin. Modern styles like jazz-rock, electronic jazz and world jazz. Rise in groups from Europe. Landmark recordings.

August 28
Jazz in India/ fusion + round-up: How jazz has evolved in India. Major artistes. Blending of Indian Music with jazz. Live scene and the role of NCPA (concerts like Sandoval or Kirk MacDonald as well as International Jazz Festival. Round-up of four sessions.
