Madan Mohan (1924-1975), the iconic Hindi film music composer, truly believed that the foremost requirement of a song is that it should be capable of capturing the interest of the listeners in a short period and sustain it in the years to follow. With such a philosophy, he created some unforgettable melodies for Indian films.

Like many of his contemporary music directors, his work was ensconced in Indian classical (raga) music using Indian as well as Western instruments, and also adopting Western elements like harmony and counterpoint. However, the artistic sensitivity with which he chose to blend these elements led to a unique flavour, bearing an indelible stamp of this legendary composer. No wonder, his music was, and still continues to be appreciated by both classical music aficionados and common persons alike.

Kushal Gopalka is a music lover, musicologist, historian and archivist who has written,  made documentary films, curated exhibitions on Indian music and regularly makes researched musical presentations in India and abroad. Archisman Mozumder is a music enthusiast across multiple genres. With regular interactions with artistes and musicians associated with cine and classical music, he conducts guided listening sessions on Indian music.

Organised during Madan Mohan’s birth centenary year, this presentation will take a studied look at his musical career of 25 years, rediscovering the magic of some of his mesmerising melodies.
