Miracle on Matunga Street is the story of Tulsa Harry Peter, a matriarch who is happy running her soup kitchen and tending to the family heirloom, a 20-foot shrine of the blessed mother Velankanni Amma, which adjoins the house. This beacon of faith was commemorated on the day in 1947 when the blessed mother materialised in the barbershop that Tulsa’s father ran. The play opens with a family meeting. Daughter Nisha divulges her plan to finally “go public” with the news of this miracle within the home by creating a one-woman play about the secret of the statue of Velankanni Amma. But the family’s faith is soon shaken when a deathbed confession causes the secret in their midst to unravel. The play has a message about faith—the lack of it—why we believe what we believe and the need to adapt to life’s surprises.
