My Fair Lady (1964) is a celebrated adaptation of the Broadway musical by Alan Jay Lerner and Frederick Loewe, based on George Bernard Shaw’s play Pygmalion. The film stars Audrey Hepburn as Eliza Doolittle, Rex Harrison as Professor Henry Higgins, Stanley Holloway as Alfred P. Doolittle, and Wilfrid Hyde-White as Colonel Pickering.

The story begins in Edwardian London, where Eliza, a poor Cockney flower girl, dreams of escaping her harsh life. She meets Henry Higgins, an arrogant phonetics professor, who boasts that he can transform her into a refined lady with impeccable speech. Intrigued by the challenge, Higgins takes her under his wing, with support from his friend Colonel Pickering. Eliza endures grueling lessons in speech and manners, leading to humorous and touching moments. However, Eliza’s newfound confidence sparks tension with Higgins, who struggles to acknowledge her as an independent individual rather than his ‘creation’. The story explores themes of self-worth, identity and societal barriers of class.

My Fair Lady is renowned for its lavish production, stunning costumes and iconic songs, including ‘I Could Have Danced All Night’ and ‘On the Street Where You Live’. Harrison’s performance earned him an Academy Award, while Hepburn’s charm and grace cemented her legacy in this timeless classic.
