Nad Anand: A Tribute to Balgandharva and Bhimsen Joshi

The world of Indian music is rich with diverse traditions, forms and genres; from primitive to folk, devotional, popular, classical and contemporary. Each of these expressions have well-defined aesthetic norms and idioms that shape its musical identity, and therefore warrant special training with masters from the specific field. No wonder, there are only a few artistes who can authentically render more than one genre.

Endowed with a rich musical legacy, Anand Bhate was recognised as a child prodigy. His ability to perform stage music (natyasangeet) in the style of legendary maestro, Balgandharva, earned him awards and accolades from connoisseurs. Initiated into classical (art) music by Chandrashekhar Deshpande, he went on to train with Yashwantrao Marathe and the inimitable virtuoso of Kirana tradition, Bhimsen Joshi. Bhate has to his credit several performances of Hindustani music, natyasangeet and devotional music presented at prestigious venues across India as well as overseas in many countries. He has also acted in the musical play, Sangeet Saubhadra, and won the National Award for his playback singing for the Marathi film Balgandharva.

In this recital, Bhate will pay tribute to two virtuosos, Narayan Rajhans alias Balgandharva (1888-1967) and Bhimsen Joshi (1922-2011), with a bouquet of forms ranging from bada khayal and chhota khayal to pad, abhang, bhajan and such others representing genres of Hindustani music, natyasangeet and devotional music.
