Listening Session on the Artistry of Omkarnath Thakur

An NCPA Presentation in collaboration with Music Forum, Mumbai.

This session is presented around the 127th birth anniversary of the celebrated vocalist and musicologist, Omkarnath Thakur (1897-1967).

Born in Gujarat, Omkarnath Thakur had the privilege of being groomed, at a very young age, by the legendary Gwalior gharana maestro, Vishnu Digambar Paluskar (1872-1931). The most striking feature of his music was his extraordinary ability to evoke emotions in the minds of listeners through the media of svara (note), sahitya (lyrics) and kaku (voice modulations). Also, his conscious and extensive use of some aspects of abhinaya (histrionics) like facial expressions and hand gestures helped create a strong audiovisual expression laden with emotional impact. In short, his dramatic presentation was not only a treat to the ears but also a delight to watch.

Thakur was one of the earliest Indian musicians to tour and perform in Europe. His work, both as a musician and musicologist, led to the establishment of a music college at the Banaras Hindu University where he groomed a large number of eminent disciples.

The session will include selected excerpts of the maestro performing ragas: Darbari, Adana, Nilambari, and songs like ‘Vande Mataram’ and ‘Main Nahi Makhan Khayo’. This audio session will be guided by Dr. N. Rajam, an eminent exponent of violin, who had the privilege of being mentored by Omkarnath Thakur, besides accompanying him on violin during his concerts.
