The raga is a central and predominant concept in Indian music that serves as a basic framework for composition and improvisation in Indian classical (art) music. Technically, a raga is a musical entity in which the choice of notes, their order and hierarchy, the manner of intonation, relative duration and their specific melodic approach are clearly defined.

There are ragas with similar scales and similar melodic configuration, similar melodic configuration but different scales, similar scales but different melodic configuration, and those exhibiting partial similarity. Nevertheless, by virtue of the above-mentioned musical characteristics, a given raga embodies a specific musical idea which is uniquely identified with it.

This session will explore sets of related ragas, addressing their common as well as exclusive features. Taking recourse to traditional compositions, the musical characteristics will be explained and demonstrated in detail to reveal how these ragas are related and yet have a distinct character.

Trained under several stalwarts, including Satish Bhowmik, Sunil Bose, D. T. Joshi, K. G. Ginde and Vijay Kichlu, Shubhra Guha is an acclaimed exponent of the Agra gharana. Besides khayal, her training and repertoire also include dhrupad and dhamar as well as thumri and dadra in poorab ang. Presently she teaches at the ITC Sangeet Research Academy, Kolkata. Having performed widely in India and overseas, and recorded several albums, she is a recipient of some top awards and accolades.
