This event makes available to lovers of Indian music some of the priceless archival recordings of great masters from the archives of the NCPA.

Born in Myanmar, mridangam maestro Palghat Raghu (1928-2009) was initially trained by T. Venkatarama Iyer and T. Raghava Iyer. Later, he was mentored by the mridangam maestro Palghat T. S. Mani Iyer. Having toured extensively in India and overseas, he accompanied several eminent artistes, including Hindustani instrumentalists. He was also involved in east-west fusion music. A recipient of several prestigious awards, he was a visiting professor of music at some universities in the US.

Anantha R. Krishnan and Abhishek Raghuraman are grandsons of maestro Palghat Raghu and had the privilege of training under him. Krishnan, also a student of tabla maestro Zakir Hussain, provides mridangam accompaniment while also participating in cross-cultural ensembles. With a Masters of Fine Arts in Electronic Music and Percussion, he currently serves on the faculty of percussion at KM Music Conservatory in Chennai.

Starting off as a mridangam player under the tutelage of his grandfather, Raghuraman chose to be a Carnatic vocalist. Initiated by his mother, he went on to train with maestro P. S. Narayanaswami. He also credits mandolin maestro U. Srinivas with having greatly influenced his musicality. An ‘A’ grade artiste of All India Radio, Raghuraman has to his credit many successful performances, awards and accolades.

The session will feature select audio and video excerpts of Palghat Raghu’s recordings specially made at the NCPA during 1987-88 and master classes conducted during 1989.
