This event makes available to lovers of Indian music priceless archival recordings of the great masters from the archives of the NCPA.

Born in a family of music aficionados, Nikhil Banerjee (1931-1986) was one of the most talented and respected sitar players of his generation. He had the privilege of being mentored by the inimitable sarod maestro of Maihar gharana, Allauddin Khan, and his son, Ali Akbar Khan. His own approach to music stemmed from a quest to have a lyrical idiom to his playing. This allowed him to develop his own distinct “sound” that was a blend of vocal expressions projected through techniques specific to the sitar. For many, his refined style combined the best of all the major schools of sitar playing, making him a model exponent of this popular instrument.

Nayan Ghosh, son and disciple of tabla maestro Nikhil Ghosh, has also trained with legendary virtuosos such as Ahmedjan Thirakwa, Gyan Prakash Ghosh and Buddhadev Dasgupta. Having equal proficiency in tabla, sitar and vocal music, he has performed as a solo artiste and accompanist all over the world and has taught for several years. He has been a recipient of the prestigious Sangeet Natak Akademi Award, in addition to numerous others.

The session will feature select excerpts of Nikhil Banerjee’s archival recordings made in 1975 at the NCPA.
