Essentially a form of romantic poetry, the format of ghazal lends itself to being composed to music and presented as a song

Veteran ghazal singer Ghansham Vaswani, despite being trained in classical music, chose the language of ghazal to express his creativity. He was mentored by legendary singer Jagjit Singh. Vaswani has composed and sung ghazals for TV serials, films and independent albums. Notable among them is the album Forget Me Not, specially composed for Singh. Besides having command over the idiom of ghazal, Vaswani is also known for singing bhajan and Sindhi contemporary music.

This online workshop will focus on distinct features of the structure of the ghazal, which is essentially based on rhyming couplets (sher) and how they lend themselves to be set in a musical frame. There will also be a discussion on the manner in which the aesthetic and emotional appeal of the ghazal can be heightened by taking recourse to myriad shades of human emotions. The deliberations will highlight the contribution of some seminal poets and singers, leading up to the development of present-day form of ghazal as a genre.
