Prominent among the various initiatives undertaken by Citi and NCPA are two programmes: ‘Support to Guru-Shishya Tradition’ and ‘Scholarships to Young Musicians’. The ‘NCPA Citi Promising Artistes Series’ has been launched to offer a performance opportunity to the beneficiaries of these programmes.

Being trained by Nityanand Haldipur as a part of ‘Support to Guru Shishya Tradition’ programme

Currently studying in Class 12, Prakhar Joshi started his musical journey at the age of six under his father Gopal Chandra Joshi. When he was 11 years old, renowned flautist Nityanand Haldipur accepted him as his pupil. Around the same time, Joshi was also offered a government scholarship by the Centre for Cultural Resources and Training (CCRT), New Delhi, for Hindustani classical flute.

Joshi has been earning accolades all along. He won the gold medal at Harivallabh Sangeet Sammelan Pratiyogita, Jalandhar, in the junior non-percussion group in 2018 and the bronze medal at the grand finale of Classical Voice of India in Lucknow the next year. A silver followed in the same category in 2024. In the same year, Joshi was involved in the composition of ‘Meera Bai ke Bhajan,’ a 10-day programme at CCRT under flautist Chetan Joshi.

Winner of ‘NCPA Citi Scholarship for young musicians’ for the year 2022-24

Varadraj Bhosale is a sitarist of the Etawah Vilayat Khani family and has been a disciple of Arvind Parikh since 2007. He has been trained under the guru-shishya parampara for 16 years having started with his father Narendra Bhosale. He is the sixth generation in the Bhosale family who has taken up music.

Bhosale is known for his upaj ang, which means being spontaneous with his craft. He has performed at many venues across India and has been awarded several scholarships. His other accolades include the M. S. S Shanmukhananda Award, Sangeet Sharda Sanman, Sahara Foundation Puraskar, Swar Ratna Puraskar and more. He showcases his compositions with his band, Varadraj and Friends.
