Selection Criteria for an Auditorium from the Perspective of Music Performance

The quality of a cultural event reflects the nature of the venue in which it is held. Whether open-air or closed will make a marked difference to the acoustic quality, and also the look, feel and overall experience of the performance. When performers and their listeners understand the criteria that govern the “suitability” of a space for a specific purpose, it contributes significantly to the experience.

This workshop aims to examine various aspects of an auditorium from the viewpoint of performance of music. The speaker will deliberate upon the following points: auditorium formats, seating capacity, sight lines, room acoustics, sound amplification, lighting, backstage facilities, etc., which could have a bearing on the overall quality of a music concert, referring with examples to some major auditoria around the world, including those within the NCPA complex.

Nayan Kale is an electrical engineer with additional qualifications in computer software, system analysis and application, as well as sound recording and reproduction. Having spent more than four decades working behind the stage and understanding the design, operations and management aspects of some iconic theatres, he is presently the Chief Executive – Technical at the NCPA. He leads engineering operations, performance management and maintenance of its theatres.
