Copyrights and Performer Rights in Indian Classical Music

Like in any vocation, performing artistes also need to be aware of the legal and ethical aspects associated with their profession.

With a specific focus on Indian classical (art) music, this workshop is aimed at exploring the intricacies of copyright and performer rights, dealing with key issues like composition rights, recordings and specific performer’s rights associated with musical performances.

A discussion will be held on copyright as specifically applied to features of Indian music like ragas, compositions and lyrics, and the distinction between traditional and new compositions. Issues, such as rights related to recording and broadcasting (live and through media), will also be discussed. Participants will gain insights into managing and enforcing these rights, along with practical guidance through real-life case studies.

Sandhya Surendran, a media and entertainment lawyer, is a music and film industry expert and has worked extensively with talent and production as legal counsel, besides acting as a legal advisor to media publications and tech start-ups in the entertainment industry. She has a specific interest in artiste rights, and in her effort to build more awareness and drive change, she regularly conducts workshops to train industry stakeholders in rights management and the nuances of copyright and licensing. Her podcast, Lex Talk Music, is regarded one of India’s first to be dedicated to the business of the Indian music industry.
