The Ramayana – A Dance Drama in Puppet Style

Founded in 1952 by Shanti Bardhan in Mumbai, The Little Ballet Troupe pioneered a revolutionary approach to Indian ballet. Departing from traditional star-performer formats, the troupe draws inspiration from India’s rich folk traditions to create truly collaborative performances. Its name signifies not a limitation but a dedication to authentic artistic expression through collective creativity. Guided by its founding vision, the troupe continues to integrate India’s diverse cultural heritage into performances that emphasise artistic excellence over mere showmanship. In its current avatar as the  Rangasri Little Ballet Troupe, the institution continues to serve as a centre for preserving and advancing India’s performing arts traditions while fostering innovation and excellence in theatrical expression.

At Mudra, the troupe will present a folkloric version of the Ramayana by combining the features of ballet and Rajasthani puppet play. The movements of the human puppets are carefully stylised. Dancers wear square masks on which faces, crowns and head gears are modelled and painted. They create the illusion of wooden, head-heavy puppets but the skilful execution lends an almost fantastic animation to the faces. Masks and puppets play a significant role in aharya, enhancing storytelling and character portrayal. Originally conceived by Shanti Bardhan in 1952, The Ramayana – A Dance Drama in Puppet Style continues to regale audiences 70 years after its first show.
