“Coins in Rivers”

Coins in Rivers, a new book of poetry by Rochelle Potkar, will be read at this edition of Page to Stage. Conceptualised by Sonu Anand, the reading will feature the voices of Seerat Mast, Richa Shula, Rutuja Awaghad Patil and Mudit Singhal.

Potkar, who has won awards for her poems and has an earlier anthology of poetry (Four Degrees of Separation, 2016) to her name, is also a widely published short story writer and poetry editor. Poems from her current book, published by Hachette India, cover a range of subjects—how an anthill is the biggest gift in love, the secret and perverse habits of Harry Mendonsa, which are uncovered only at his funeral, the staccato living of a POW and how a country and a journalist might be star-crossed lovers.

Potkar’s poems like ‘Bedding Day’ and ‘Litter of Applicasun to eschool Principl’ are a nod to the malleability of language. They depict love, grief, anger and defiance glimmering like coins beneath the surface of water, tethered to the weight of wishes. Coins in Rivers is a deep meditation on being a woman, motherhood and citizenship.

After the reading, award-winning writer, educator and psychologist Scherezade Siobhan will be in conversation with Potkar.
