The Reality Check film series promotes documentary filmmakers in India whose work reflects life and culture in the country today in a provocative blend of creativity and experimentation.

The act of filming is an act of archiving—documenting a past that has continued into the future. Of the factories and jetties standing on the banks of the river Hooghly on the outskirts of Kolkata, only some are operational. This is because West Bengal’s 165-year-old jute industry, which once produced ever-useful gunny bags, rope and jute textiles, used in trade and commerce worldwide, has been overrun by plastic—a more durable, but environmentally disastrous material. Jute is now attracting renewed interest for its eco-friendly qualities, but the mills face frequent shutdowns and lockouts. Workers despair as they get replaced by precision machines. Can environmental imperatives recuperate a future for jute and jute workers? With the fibre as its pivot, The Golden Thread attempts to capture the encounter between jute workers and early industrial machines.
