Seminar on tappa, tarana & allied forms in North Indian (Hindustani) music

Indian music has a wealth of genres that have evolved and developed across many centuries, bearing witness to the socio-historical influences across time. During music recitals, forms such as tarana, tappa, trivat, chaturang etc. are often rendered after the presentation of main form like khayal, and seem to be immensely popular with both, the connoisseurs as well as general audience.

The seminar will attempt at outlining the distinctive features of some of these forms with a view to unravel their socio-cultural significance in the Indian tradition. Forms such as tarana, khayalnuma tarana, tappa, tap-khayal, trivat, chaturang, ashtapadi, talageet and sargamgeet, talasagar will be discussed.

Besides academic deliberations by experts on the origin, history and aesthetics of different forms, there will be audio-visual clips and live demonstrations by reputed practitioners to illustrate the actual practice of the genres.

The speakers /panelists will include well-known scholars and artistes: Shanno Khurana, Vidyadhar Vyas, Naman Ahuja, Meeta Pandit, Maitreyi Majumdar, Nabhodeep Chakraborty and others.
