Beethoven: Symphony No. 3 “Eroica”
In this series of talks on Western classical music, Dr. Cavas Bilimoria takes listeners through musical concepts, the lives of composers and their famous works, interspersed with examples from recorded music. The talks this month are all about Beethoven, starting with the Eroica Symphony. Translated as ‘heroic’, the composition is a triumph of the human spirit against all odds. The piece took shape between 1803 and 1804 when the composer’s loss of hearing had progressed to a frustrating degree, forcing him to challenge the norms of the symphonic form in length, harmony and emotional content.
