The genius of Tchaikovsky
In this series of talks on Western classical music, Dr. Cavas Bilimoria takes listeners through musical concepts, the lives of composers and their famous works, interspersed with examples from recorded music. The first talk this month is about Tchaikovsky, and will uncover three of his masterpieces: The Romeo and Juliet Fantasy Overture describes the turmoil and tenderness of the Shakespearean tragedy; Marche Slave paints a vivid picture of Russia’s intervention in the Serbian-Ottoman War and the 1812 Overture or the Solemn Overture is a commemoration of Russia’s victory over the French army of Napoleon in 1812, marked by the climactic use of cannon fire and church bells.
