Vivaldi: Concerto for four violins
Haydn: Cello Concerto No.1 in C major
The second talk of the series in October by Dr. Cavas Bilimoria will take listeners through two significant compositions: Vivaldi’s Concerto for Four Violins, published in Amsterdam in 1711 and Haydn’s Cello Concerto No. 1, composed around 1761. Vivaldi’s work later came to the attention of J. S. Bach, then a little-known court musician in Germany. Captivated by the Italian composer’s treatment of contrasting themes, Bach transcribed the work for four harpsichords and strings. Haydn’s Cello Concerto No. 1 was long thought to be lost. It resurfaced only in 1961 in the archives of the Prague National Museum, thanks to musicologist Oldřich Pulkert. It has since become an essential part of every cellist’s repertoire.
