Much like the audience’s imagining of the goings-on backstage before a performance opens—nervous actors looking gravely at themselves in the mirror, prop handlers handling a crisis or the director having a tense moment—actors are curious about their viewers too. Third Bell turns the spotlight on the audience which comes to watch a play. What are the people sitting in their seats preparing for? What state of mind are they in? The play takes a quiet and observant look at conversations which occur before the third bell rings. Sometimes silly, and at other times mundane, these exchanges are telling. We are watching you, before you watch us perform. And you, dear audience members, are always interesting.
