“Vanva” (meaning forest fire) is a short story from a collection by D. B. Mokashi.

The central character is Saraswati, a simple, straightforward young woman from the

Katkari tribal community. The story revolves around a forest fire that occurs one night. It captures the tranquillity before the fire, the chaos among animals and people when the fire spreads and the haunting silence after the blaze has subsided, leaving the forest in ashes.

The narrative moves from one silence to another, depicting the journey of nature and human life in a time of destruction. The story brings to light the Katkari community’s umbilical connection with the forest and subtly addresses the pressing issue of environmental degradation.
